Obsession: Cake

I used to decorate cakes. You know, the tried and true Wilton School of cake decorating type of cakes. It gave me a whole lot of respect for people who do that for a living. Squeezing out all that obsession james cakeJPGbutter cream is hard on the hands! Resisting eating it is hard on the willpower, and since I rarely win against willpower, that butter cream itself was hard on the hips.

Now my cake decorating is reserved for my kids birthdays and watching others do it on TV. Lucky for obsession bronwenme, the Food Network shows these fabulous cake challenges. Disney Princess cakes, Villain cakes, Tallest Monument cakes, birthday cakes, engagement cakes… Well, you get the picture, they do tons of different cake challenges. If you’ve never watched one, they rock. Basically, three or more challenges are given the theme and usually about 8 hours to create the best cake. Sometimes they work with their own assistant, sometimes they get a surprise assistant. In the challenge I watched last week, the decorators were paired with the mothers of pageant girls forobsession duff a pageant cake. Way fun to watch!!

My favorite contenders? Bronwen Weber, James Roselle, Jay Ellis. And back before The Ace of Cakes, Duff Goldman was always awesome to watch!!

How about you? Have you ever watched a cake challenge? Do you decorate cakes or are you interested in them?

Wow, did not know you used to decorate cakes. Hats off to you! I love cakes, esp. European cakes, and watch a few cake shows, but definitely have to watch FN Cake Challenges!

That’s cool that you used to do the cake decorating thing. I sooo wanted to do that when my kids were young, but was never able to take the classes. So I bought everything I needed, every tip you could imagine, every die color for the frosting, cookie cutters, you name it, I bought it. I horded everything thinking some day when my kids were older I would be able to take the classes. Well that day has come and gone! :) Though i would still love to do it, I have very little time or patients for that sort of thing. So last summer I gave all of my cake decorating supplies to my daughters home schooled girlfriends. Their grandmother was teaching them he basics of cake decorating! :) She’s done a good job, too. They’ve made some beautiful cakes. Yummy too!!! I haven’t seen many cake shows which is good because he impulse might come back and that’s the last thing I need is to add yet one more thing on my list of things to do! ;)

Oh, this is one of my favorite things to watch on the Food Network! I saw the one with the mystery assistants being the pageant moms, that was cool. I liked the one where the assistants were the husbands and the wives had to pick their cake from the line up. There is one decorator that I truly don’t like though and if she in the challenge I will turn it off and not watch. She is rude and I refuse to watch her being an a**
