Castle: Love or Infatuation?

I had to spend some time thinking about Love Me Dead.  My first reaction?  It was a pretty okay episode.  My second reaction?  Where’s the freaking sexual tension, already?  My third reaction?  Awwww, Castle’s such a sucker.

Castle barfightBut did I like the show?  I’m still not sure.  I liked the twists in the case and thought it was pretty clever, but I’d figured out who’d done it by the time Castle was strolling down the hallway with takeout for one.  I laughed out loud in the bar fight scene.  I empathized with the ‘OMG my baby is growing up’ look on Castle’s face when Alexis talked about going to college.  But was it a fight for dvr space show? I’m still not sure.

I think my reasons are this:

  • I don’t watch much TV and rarely a series because once I get focused on a book, I tend to use all my non-family time writing.  Which means I miss a lot of episodes, and by the time I’d have the, well, time to watch, I’ve usually heard what happened and don’t feel the urgency to see for myself.
  • I got hooked on Castle for his bad boy charm -or as Beckett puts it, watching him act like a twelve year old.  I totally appreciate his other facets.  That he’s a wonderful and caring father. That he’s a got a white knight complex.  That he’s cute and funny and a guy’s guy.  But it was the naughty irresponsible, Peter Pan side of him that reeled me in in the first place, ya know?
  • Castle’s a writer.  I’m a writer.  One of the coolest things about watching each week was seeing the insights and fantasies (okay, seriously, those launch parties are so totally my fantasy!!).  I love the writer part of the show and that was one of the reasons I kept watching in the first season.  And, okay, I’d have to say that’s still nicely front and center in this season, too.
  • Last but not least, I’m all about the romance.  I swear, I read Lord of the Rings (all million pages of the 3 books) just for the romance between Aragorn and Arwen.  One of my favorite subplots of The Belgariad is the romance between Belgarian and C’Nedra.  I’d have been all over the romance angle in Harry Potter, but in kids books thats just kinda icky.  But tell ya what, by the last book and the time Ron and Hermione kissed?  Yep, that rocked.  Bottom line, I’m a romance reader first and last, I live for the genre.  So while I’m intrigued with the criminal case each week, I’m really invested in the romance between Castle and Beckett.

So I’m feeling a little disappointed .  I wanna see more rising tension between Castle and Beckett.  I wanna see more about her mother’s case.  I wanna see more poker games, darn it!  I want that edgy fun that hooked me in the first place.

Will I stick around for the rest of the season to see if it happens?  Yes.  Definitely.
Will I come back next season if it doesn’t happen?  I’m still not sure.  But… Probably not.

Favorite Scene:  The Barfight

Favorite Line: When Castle thanked Becket for not saying “I told you so.” and she told him “That starts tomorrow.”

How about you? Are you still as hooked as you were at the beginning of the season?  Am I missing something or asking too much?  What did you think of last night’s episode?  Favorite Line?

I really liked this week’s episode. First time I didn’t figure out who did it. I liked the twists that it took. I do agree with you they really need to add some sexual tension between Becket and Castle, it’s definitely missing that.
